Recently, 又南 and 心兒 from《暴走Joke》visited the GoGoX Driver Centre to experience a day in the life of a GoGoVan delivery driver. Our team arranged for them to meet Sam, one of our top-rated drivers who has been using the platform for over a year. With more than 5,000 completed orders under his belt, Sam’s experience and dedication made him the perfect guide for our hosts.
The initial jitters: facing the challenge
又南 and 心兒 were both a little apprehensive about the day ahead. After all, being a delivery driver is known to be really hard work. It’s a job that demands quick thinking, physical stamina, and a keen sense of direction. Sam did a great job easing them into the “job,” sharing valuable insights from his daily routine. He typically handles 13 to 16 orders per day, often assisting production companies with equipment transportation or helping renovation companies move materials between sites.
The realities of a driver’s day
Drivers like Sam often receive back-to-back job requests through the GoGoX platform. It’s up to the driver to assess if the next job’s location is feasible based on their current position. He explains that he is not being picky—it’s about ensuring customers get the delivery service they expect, especially when it comes to arrival times. Communication is key here. Sam emphasised the importance of keeping the customer informed, especially if they are in a hurry.
GoGoX appreciates delivery drivers like Sam who understand the importance of providing great service to customers. He takes great pride in his work, seeing himself as a service provider first and foremost. He believes that a clean, pleasant-smelling vehicle, polite interactions, and a comfortable ride are essential to ensuring customer satisfaction. “We don’t want to be given a one-star rating,” he quipped. Small gestures, like adjusting the air conditioning for customers who have been working outdoors or playing their preferred music, can make all the difference.
A flexible but demanding schedule
Sam’s day starts at around 8:30 am and ends between 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. However, he sometimes takes on additional orders if they align with his route home, maximising his earnings for the day. This flexibility is one of the perks of being a GoGoVan driver, though it also requires careful time management and a good sense of the city’s traffic patterns.
又南 takes the wheel
又南 was the first to pick up an order, quickly learning that the first step is to call the customer to confirm the address and details about the goods being transported. This ensures there are no misunderstandings and sets the stage for a smooth delivery. From 又南’s experience with a few orders, it became clear that customers generally care only about one thing: how quickly the driver can arrive. With most jobs, the estimated time of arrival (ETA) is about five minutes, which is a major strength of the GoGoVan service.
Conversely, it is also important for customers to be respectful of drivers’ time, as every minute spent waiting has a direct impact on their earnings. To be fair to drivers, the first 15 minutes are free of charge, but after that, a fee of 10 HKD per five minutes is applied, and this fee goes 100% to the drivers.
A good riding experience is when both customers and drivers are respectful of each other’s time and effort.
Learning the ropes: experience matters
Experienced drivers like Sam have an edge—they can often predict traffic conditions and find shorter routes that aren’t the default on Google Maps. This skill not only saves time but also enhances customer satisfaction. 又南 and 心兒 both noted the sense of accomplishment and happiness that comes with completing a job, especially when it’s done efficiently.
Customers vary widely, with many being regular users of GoGoVan. One customer even claimed to be able to predict a driver’s style based on their voice, having taken over 99 trips with GoGoVan! 心兒 also had her chance to take some orders, proving that driving for GoGoX isn’t just a job for men. We’re proud to have female drivers as part of our team.
Communication is key: managing expectations
Throughout the day, the importance of communication was a recurring theme. During peak hours or in heavy traffic, it’s crucial to manage customer expectations regarding estimated time of arrival. New delivery drivers, who might not be familiar with all the routes, sometimes face the frustration of customers, but with time and experience, they too learn the ropes.
Reflecting on a day’s work
After a long day, 又南 and 心兒 both agreed that being a delivery driver is hard work. Their experience gave them a newfound appreciation for the drivers they encounter daily.
So, the next time you book a delivery service with GoGoX, take a moment to appreciate the driver behind the wheel. After all, kindness is a gift that everyone can afford to give.
